I’m a girl hopelessly in love with music. I like just about every kind of music, the exception being doom core…never could get into that.
Playing music is the purest form of self expression in my opinion. When I play music, I touch the infinite unknown.
This love affair of mine began at the age of seven. That’s the year I learned to play the flute. My eyes were opened to a world teeming with possibilities. The entire world fell away as music and I created together.
When I was ten, I heard Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols. That song exploded my world. My ears rang with Johnny Rotten’s snarl and all I could think was, “I have found my tribe”.
Fast forward to the year I moved to Los Angeles. I always dreamed of playing in a band. But, no one was looking for a flute player and I didn’t know how to play guitar.
One night I was at the Burgandy Room; a dark, Hollywood hole in the wall. It was dirty, dangerous, and rock’n’roll. (It’s since been remodeled and fancified thanks to the gentrification of Hollywood.) John, I’m Only Dancing came on. Matt Southwell was perched on the barstool next to me. He half-jokingly issued a challenge: if I could learn the bassline to that song, he would be in a band with me.
One thing people who know me will tell you, never challenge me unless you are prepared for me to meet that challenge…and then some.
I sat everyday with a bass, stopping and starting the CD player, trying to learn that bassline. A week later I had it licked. I was officially in a band (much to Matt’s chagrin)…my first band, Bang Sugar Bang.
What a ride that band was…
Today, I play bass and sing in Mad Planet with Greg Gordon.
We are a force of nature.
This blog will document our everyday exploits and my adventures as a woman musician living in Los Angeles.
Enjoy.
